It’s been two months since we last checked in at the future site of the Washington metro areas tallest occupied building. the 470 foot high rise at Capital One’s headquarter in Tysons. The building will be Capital One’s new headquarter when complete, and will allow the company to grow further and consolidate offices it currently leases elsewhere in the region. The near skyscraper has been steadily climbing since our last review, nearly doubling in height since that time.
The new buildings is now starting to rise above the existing 14 story Capital One headquarters which measures 226 feet in height. Both buildings will be joined with further development soon, as Capital One has announced an agreement with Wegmans to build a grocery anchored residential phase to their campus, with a goal opening in 2019. Given the typical 30 month construction period, and the added complexities of finishing a grocery store, we’ll likely see a second ground breaking at the campus within the next 6 months to maintain that date.
While the new building is pretty tall already, there’s still a whole other half yet to go. The building will continue to rise, and form an iconic presence on the skyline, through much of 2017, before the glass glazing begins to climb in pursuit.
