Construction at the new 470′ headquarters of Capital One has progressed all summer and the new building might be a long way from peaking, but it’s just started to peek above ground. The entire region has it’s eyes on the new high rise tower, possibly the first in the DC Metropolitan to have a legitimate case for being called a skyscraper. Once complete, Capital One’s headquarters will be the tallest building, with the exception of the Washington Monument, in and around the Beltway.
The construction of new headquarters bodes well for the local economy too. There are the short term hundreds of construction jobs created but it is also an indication that Capital One has no intention of moving it’s headquarters any time soon. The additional office space will allow them to continue to expand, add new positions, and consolidate other non-transit oriented offices into their new space.
What’s unknown at this time is whether the new Wegman’s that is slated to come to the future mixed use residential/office campus will begin construction any time soon. The goal for Capital One is to have the grocery completed as the pedestal to another high rise by 2019. Based on that time line we could see another high rise beginning construction at the campus as soon as Spring 2016.
