Once the Silver Line starts the Westpark Transit Center will go from having several buses utilizing it for time checks to a single bus system. And a week before that date, the center is looking like a ghost town and construction site. We’ve reached out in an attempt to get the story behind the work, but there is no information online about what is happening.
It appears, as a guess, that they are installing an exit ramp directly to the Dulles Toll Road exit in order to avoid mixing in with traffic on Jones Branch Drive.
That would be an excellent improvement, if there were any buses using the center. It seems odd to be making these kinds of changes to a center that will be stripped of most routes.
The silver lining (pun always intended) may be that this lays the ground work for returning a much more vibrant and functional Westpark Transit Center. We’ll see if the County takes the opportunity to improve the asset as opposed to allowing it go unused.
* Just before this posting we did get a tweet from Fairfax Connector “RE: Construction at West*Park. Got the answer that you’re looking for. Fairfax Water is installing a new line.” It doesn’t look like a typical trench, as the barriers are pretty wide spread on the parcel, but I guess that is what’s happening here.
