When the Board of Supervisors approved the Westpark Plaza rezoning late last year a lot of people were happy that days were numbered at the aging, and abandoned, Best Western at the corner of Leesburg Pike. The hotel has been abandoned for nearly a year, which always leads to complications from poor maintenance to vagrants. It now looks like the Best Western’s demolition is imminent with the new presence of construction trailers on the property.
Set to replace the nearly 40 year old hotel and poorly designed surface parking lot are three high rise towers (2 apartments and 1 hotel) which will include ground level retail and a new street grid connecting Solutions Drive to Westpark Drive and Leesburg Pike. A central public park and significant pedestrian improvements are also part of the 1.4 million square foot project.
We look forward to watching the demolition of the old building. If it’s anything like the demolition of the office building along Anderson Road, it should be fun to watch. No word yet on when to expect the first apartment building tower associated with the project.

It looks like we announced demolition a bit early at Westpark Plaza. Thanks to one of our readers we revisited the project location and now see that the construction trailer previously spotted is a used car temporary trailer for sales. It does seem interesting that they chose a temporary trailer for their sales building, perhaps the idea was to transfer it over when demolition is planned, but for the time being it looks like Westpark Plaza is still pending. With all of the ground breakings that have occurred the past few months, some of which happened with little fanfare, it seemed obvious this was another example. No word from Dittmar on when they will begin work, though they did previously say sometime in 2015.
