If you’ve taken the Silver Line through Tysons or driven on Route 123 recently you may have noticed the massive site work occurring on the Capital One campus on Colshire Drive. The project is part of the Capital One rezoning and is the first stage for the campus’ redevelopment which includes their ambitious 470′ new headquarters tower which will become that tallest commercial building in the region. The first steps to that project include the site work to provide new street grid links to both Colshire Drive and at the intersection of Capital One Drive.
From the somewhat bird’s eye view of the Silver Line platform at McLean Station you can see that work has progressed significantly and crews are putting in the final top coats on roadway surfaces as well as new wide sidewalks and street plantings. The grid infrastructure is a vast improvement to the single in – single out design which caused huge headaches for years at rush hour, now splitting the demand to two connection points, and ultimately having direct access to the 495 HOT lanes via the Jones Branch Connector (due in 2018).
It looks like once crews are done constructing the road grid system they may move on to the new office tower next as Capital One expects to break ground later this year. Riders of the Silver Line will get great views of the project as it progresses and the gateway status of the project will serve as a symbol of all the changes coming to town over the next decade.
