When we last visited the Capital One project in January the snow covered site was progressing slowly through the winter frost. The foundation piles were being drilled at that time, and temporary construction trailers had just begun to populate the site. The construction site might look similar to that January visit but there are significant differences.
It looks like the foundation piles and excavation has been completed on the site, or is close to being complete. The number of excavators and other earth moving equipment on the site has diminished which is a good sign that we should expect a tower crane within the next several weeks. That tower crane will likely become the tallest occupied structure in Northern Virginia before the 470′ building is topped, and should be visible from most points in Tysons at final height.
The Capital One headquarters marks a new milestone for Fairfax County, being the first building above 400 feet in the county, and when complete it will be the tallest occupied building in the DC metro region. Of course it doesn’t hurt that Capital One plans significant expansions which have spurred the new tower, or that more jobs in finance means diversifying the regions reliance on Government services.
We look forward to seeing this skyscraper (perhaps the first building in the area that has the right to use the term) rise on the skyline. It is sure to become a symbol for the exciting rebirth Tysons is undertaking.
