Around the Corner

Today around the corner:

Washington Post talks about the future bikeability of Tysons, and the plans for the Tour de Tysons bike race this Sunday June 30th. Race day will have events for families, races for all age groups and expert levels as well as a open ride for the community starting at 6:45 AM to show what the area could be like with a more open street vibe. There will be food and evidently a bit of live music on tap for the event. So if you are looking for something different to do on a Sunday morning, you should head out there and enjoy the festivities. Venue map

Washington Business Journal has broken news that JBG, developer of Tysons West at Springhill Metro Station, has purchased a development site that currently contains… well the Container Store (also known as Container-ception). The sale was valued at $15.2 million for 1.8 acres, or approximately $8.4 million per acre. JBG says it has no plans to immediately develop the site, especially considering the Container Store has a long-term lease on the location, however ultimately they will look to redevelop (not sure if by right or rezone) to a high rise in the future.

WRIT is getting serious about competing with new commercial high-rise space popping up around Tysons with renovation plans for their currently “aged” Sunrise Senior Living offices at 7900 Westpark. The need for the renovation may have been spurred by questions on the future inhabitants of the building, considering Sunrise was recently purchased by REIT earlier this year. Plans for the 13-story building include a completely new facade which will remove much of the worn white concrete and brutalist window frames and replace them with a more modern look. Finnegan’s Pride Sports Restaurant opens this Saturday with a grand opening event. The bar plans on having live music several nights a week, as well as karaoke nights, trivia nights, and other bar jaunts.

Lastly, local residents say they have seen something other than the grizzly traffic around town that’s bothering them. I know people complain about the bearish commute, but I wasn’t aware this is what they were talking about.
