SoHo Chocolate Factory Building, design by DDG

Around the Corner

Today Around the Corner;

If you ride metro from WFC around Tysons you likely saw the hand out for the Silver Line open house meetings. There are 3 chances at 3 different locations to find out about the project, train schedules, costs, and other details not yet hammered out. If you can make any of the meetings you can submit a question online. Based on the continued confusion over the Silver Line that was heard at last month’s bus meetings, I would encourage those of you who aren’t tracking the project daily to check it out or pose your questions.

The McLean police station is nearly finished with its $20.1 million renovation and expansion. Plenty of extra space for more police officers being hired for the increased population (not metro) anticipated in Tysons over the next 10 years. (Patch)

March will see another major rezoning project in front of the Planning Commission. Scotts Run Station, a project by Cityline Partners adjacent to Capital One and the Mitre/Northrup property will be seeking a 1.8 million square feet of mixed use development closest to the McLean Metro station. The project may be the first new office building in Tysons that meets GSA tenant requirements, a new prospect that is made possible by the existence of the Silver Line. The Planning Commission will have a hearing on the project in two weeks on March 21st. You can see the latest project plans here.

Urbanism Concept of the Day

SoHo Chocolate Factory Building, design by DDG, click to enlarge
Citroen Building, Paris click to enlarge

Architecture enthusiasts and urbanists had a love affair today after New York City Developer DDG released updated renderings of their concept for the SoHo Chocolate Factory, seen on ny.curbed.com. One part curvy ode to Gaudi with an embossed outer facade one part I.M. Pei Brutalist grid relief the eight-story infill project would otherwise be a standard glass office building. The aluminum mesh provides both a unique optical design as well as a functional system to provide horizontal plantings that keep the look of the building ever evolving.

Two months ago we noted the unique thumbprints being left on otherwise boring architecture when we visited Paris, notably with the Citroen building. It reminds us that architecture like all arts might seem repetitive and cliche at times but that unique and pleasing designs can still be thought up.
