Plans for 7900 Westpark’s facade replacement went from concept to reality this past month as crews began demolishing the existing concrete brutalist shell with a glass curtain wall for its full height.
The project won’t include any new buildings, unlike previous iterations, but it will involve a near full gut of the interior space to update and make more marketable the former headquarters for Sunrise Living. The new late modernist facade will fit in better along side of Capital One, Hilton, and Gannett Headquarters. The interior renovation will also make it an attractive alternative to the newer Class A buildings directly adjacent to metro.
Exterior demolition has yet to really get going, but should be in full force to welcome new next door neighbor Fairfax Chamber of Commerce, who will be taking over the old Custom Ink space in the adjacent wing of the building.
The 7900 Westpark office building takes up a significant portion of the skyline on approach from Route 123. Giving it a face lift also acts as a face lift to many approaching from this direction. While the project is literally superficial, it does help redefine Tysons as more than its sprawl past, and set a new tone for the city.
