Last year we headed over to Jones Branch Drive, where on a wet and surprisingly cold July morning a decent crowd showed up to watch several different tiers of riders race around North Tysons in the First Annual Tour De Tysons. The event was popular enough that the Tysons Partnership along with WABA (Washington Area Bicyclist Association) decided to keep up the tradition this year, with a new location along Tysons Boulevard and the winding decent down Westbranch Drive.
The day included some family friendly vendors, a open streets road closure for cyclists, and some food truck options including Tysons regulars Crepe Love. It was a great day to watch the race in the backdrop of new, and in some cases still rising, high rises.
Without these kinds of events Tysons would remain stuck as a corporate town with nothing for residents and a lack of community, so it’s good to see when they are popular and can be self sustaining year after year. I don’t think I’m the only resident who would enjoy seeing more events like this one happening year round.
