Elan Tysons West, a 34 story residential apartment being built near Spring Hill metro station, is beginning to “tower” over the adjacent 2-story industrial buildings that are typical of the Tyco Road area. We noted the tower crane had been assembled a couple months ago. The building is now at two-stories, largely due to the lack of below grade parking.
This part of Tysons is going to take a while to reconfigure and make habitable, but there are some good food and retail options on this stretch that most people don’t know about. Local ethnic grocers, home goods, and night life options seem out of place in this stretch of Tysons which has no residents, but with the new apartment will come a population looking for local stores and amenities.
Ultimately, the Georgelas Spring Hill rezoning, plans several buildings of mixed use that are meant to create a night life and art scene to Tysons. This isn’t as novel as you might think, First Stage theater has been located in this part of town, garnering critical acclaim, for several years. What has lacked is the inherent population that helps retail and local arts thrive. The final Spring Hill development will be home to thousands of residents, a likely welcomed presence from the local retailers.
